The formula for the success of the Outback model is very simple: about thirty years ago, a Japanese car company took a regular station wagon as a basis and added four-wheel drive to it. As a result of such a cross, we got a car that is not inferior to compact crossovers in terms of driving qualities, at the same time it has a lower price and looks like an ordinary family station wagon.

Subaru carried out a large-scale restyling of the entire model range in 2023, so the latest model update received fairly minimal changes. The radiator grill and the front bumper of the car underwent a slight modification. In addition, the Outback will have a sunroof.

Under the hood of the updated Subaru Outback 2024

The Subaru car company equips the model with two types of engines. In the basic configuration, the all-wheel drive station wagon is equipped with an atmospheric engine with a volume of 2.5 liters and a capacity of 182 horsepower. More expensive versions are equipped with a 2.5-liter turbo engine that has a capacity of 260 hp.

Both power units are paired with a CVT automatic gearbox of the variator type, which is capable of simulating gear shifting and has 8 virtual gears. With standard four-wheel drive and 22 cm of ground clearance, the Outback handles dirt, broken roads and even light off-road with ease. If you are interested in the maximum cross-country ability of this model, you should take a closer look at the configuration

Wilderness, which has a ground clearance of 24 cm, reinforced suspension, special plates to protect vulnerable parts of the bottom of the car and additional driving modes “Snow” and “Dirt”.

In general, the car has a calm character and does not differ in high speed characteristics and ultra-precise steering. The suspension of the car paired with the engines and transmission provides a smooth ride with the possibility of going off-road, which is exactly what the Subaru Outback family all-wheel drive station wagon is designed for.

A car with a basic engine is able to tow a trailer with a total weight of up to 1,200 kg, and with a more powerful turbo engine, this indicator reaches 1,600 kg.

Subaru Outback interior

The interior of the station wagon has a lot in common with the interior of the Legacy model. Only high-quality materials are used in interior decoration. Unlike a sedan, the Outback has a higher seat for the driver and plenty of space for each of the passengers. Dual-zone climate control, heated front and rear seats, a driver’s seat with an electric drive and a sufficient number of USB ports create an increased level of comfort in the cabin. The rear row of seats in the updated model has more legroom and enough headroom.

An 11.6-inch vertically-oriented touchscreen display is located on the center console. The car’s multimedia system supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Also, the information and entertainment complex has built-in navigation, a WIFI access point and wireless charging of devices. The exception is the basic configuration, which is equipped with two 7.0-inch touch screens. As for the audio accompaniment, more expensive configurations are equipped with a Harman Kardon audio system with 12 speakers.

Safety and driver assistance systems

The Subaru company pays special attention to equipping its cars with the latest safety systems. Already standard for the entire model range, the Outback model is equipped with a basic package of EyeSight driver assistance systems. Among the options included in the driver assistance package, it is possible to highlight:

  • Frontal collision warning system;
  • Emergency braking system;
  • Adaptive cruise control;
  • System of keeping the car in the traffic lane;
  • Monitoring of blind spots;
  • System for warning about traffic behind the car.

Despite the undeniable quality of representatives of the Japanese brand Subaru, every car needs timely maintenance to maintain the proper condition of components and units and the correct functioning of all car systems. The Outback model is covered by a rather mediocre warranty compared to competitors, which includes:

  • Limited car warranty for three years or 60,000 km;
  • Power unit warranty for 5 years or 100,000 km.

An important point that the Japanese automaker does not offer its customers is the lack of free scheduled maintenance.

Should you buy a 2024 Subaru Outback?

The family all-wheel drive station wagon definitely deserves special attention. The car has enough space in the cabin for comfortable transportation of the whole family.

Compared to direct competitors in its segment, Audi A4 Allroad and Volvo V60 Cross Country, the car offers its future owner a moderate price and Japanese quality, which is still felt in every detail of the cars leaving the assembly line of the Subaru factory. Of course, in terms of technology, the model is inferior to the class leaders, but the manufacturer itself does not position the station wagon as a top representative of the segment.

Subaru Outback is a good car, able to perform its function in the family for many years without creating unexpected troubles in various operating modes.
