Subaru is going to present the Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid, its first hybrid SUV with all-wheel drive, at the next New York Auto Show. Not all the details are known yet, but the Japanese brand claims that it will be the most efficient and lowest-emission hybrid compact crossover in America.

Nothing is officially known about its hybrid system yet. Subaru has only revealed that it has a boxer engine. We don’t know if we can look at the characteristics of the Subaru Viziv Concept prototype presented in Geneva to try to guess where the shots will go in the XV Crosstrek Hybrid.

The Viziv is a hybrid with a diesel boxer engine and three electric motors, one at the front along with the thermal engine and two at the rear. It would be strange if they decided to launch a diesel engine in the United States, where gasoline cars are still much more common and diesel is not available at all gas stations and is also more expensive. I would bet more on the 2.0i gasoline boxer, but it could still be a Clean Diesel, and if they want to have the most efficient crossover they may have opted for this.

And it is also doubtful whether they will opt for a configuration with a rear electric motor independent of the thermal engine that would be in front, similar to the one used by PSA Peugeot Citroën with its HYbrid4 system, since it is an AWD crossover, and knowing that it will use the Subaru traction system Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, that is, all-wheel drive or permanent all-wheel drive, both axles must always work, and we are not talking about having a car that can sometimes be front-wheel drive, sometimes total and sometimes rear-wheel drive, but always total.

If we have the thermal engine in front and the electric engine in the back, when the thermal engine stops and only the electric engine works, a priori we would only have a rear-wheel drive crossover. Perhaps it is more reasonable to think of an electric motor coupled to the heat engine in front, and a standard AWD transmission that distributes power to all wheels always, whether the heat engine is running or not. Still, these are just guesses and we will have to wait until next week to find out.

In principle, this model is intended to be marketed in North America starting in the fall of this year.
