In the great boom that large premium SUVs experienced throughout the 2000s, the Japanese firm Subaru wanted to earn a small slice of the pie of that growing market with the introduction of the 2013 Subaru Tribeca. This seven-seater, 4.8 meter long SUV was designed mainly for the American market, where it had to battle with large American SUVs but also with European models such as the BMW X5, the Mercedes ML or the Range Rover. With these models, faces were also seen in the European and Asian markets.

Such was its American vocation that its manufacturing was granted to the Lafayette plant (Louisiana, USA), where it shared assembly lines with the Subaru Lecagy and the Subaru Outback. Since the vehicle was launched on the market, its design received a lot of criticism due mainly to the strange front it presented, with a large nose in the center of the grill imitating the Subaru Impreza of the time, but with a much larger size and in a straighter grill. The rejection of that front was widespread, despite the fact that the rest of the car presented a stylized and low, even sporty line.

From the beginning, sales were much lower than expected and, after three years on the market, in 2008 it received a facelift that incorporated a more powerful engine, improved its interior and, above all, changed the design of its front. However, at Subaru they went from one extreme to the other and opted to implement a completely nondescript front, replacing the previous grille with one of horizontal bars without anything remarkable. The front lights also changed to a very conservative design, giving a slight feeling of a cheap car that did not correspond to the more than 45,000 euros starting price it had in Spain.
