Subaru launches into the field of electric cars. The Japanese brand is more than clear about its strategy, and its survival in Europe depends, to a large extent, on zero emissions. The firm has announced the arrival of three new 100% electric models until 2026 that will accompany and reinforce the brand and Solterra, today its only representative.

Subaru is more than determined to go for electric cars. The Japanese firm, which has just announced its financial results at the end of the fiscal year, has unveiled the outlines of a new strategic plan necessary to survive in the main European markets, which necessarily includes zero-emission models. Today, the Subaru Solterra is the only representative that the firm offers, developed in close collaboration with Toyota.

The sports brand follows the Japanese giant, which is a major impediment to expanding the range in terms of electric cars. Those from Toyota have decided to delay the launch of electrified novelties at the highest level until almost the next decade, with enough time to develop a new platform that can compete on equal terms with Tesla, those from the Taurus constellation have decided to stand out and go for free, announcing three new models that will serve as alternatives to the first cousin of the Toyota bZ4X.

The secret of these future ex-maximum models, but what is certain is that they will be based on the e-TGNA platform technology discarded by Toyota, and what Subaru has confirmed is that they will be produced in its Yajima facilities, doubling the manufacturing capacity of 100,000 to 200,000 units annually, while the Oizumi plant also subscribes to this magical figure from 2025.

The three new electric vehicles that Subaru will launch will be SUVs, this is the only detail that the manufacturer has revealed, and what is also seen in the image advanced by the manufacturer, a trio with the same height as the Solterra, although aimed at very different segments. . The proportions of the two posing in the foreground are not clearly visible, but the third is visible. Almost the most interesting of the three, as it reveals dimensions typical of a more subcompact model, in the style of the Toyota C-HR.

The Subaru Solterra is a medium-sized electric SUV and the first model of the Japanese brand with this propulsion system. It has 218 HP, 465 km of autonomy and shares almost all its elements with the Toyota bZ4X and the Lexus RZ, since it has been developed in collaboration with Toyota. The solterra was unveiled in May 2021, at which time carwow.es published its first data and images, and it reaches the market almost two years later.

Driving the Subaru Solterra

Its greatest virtue is comfort, in a broad sense, since it has a very soft and well-crafted suspension, together with a capacity to travel through complicated areas, with mud or snow, superior to that of its rivals. This is very common in Subaru models and the Solterra has a similar commitment, where electrification is not a problem. Its main disadvantage is that it is not as well isolated from noise as other similar electric vehicles, especially on the highway.

In our test drive I came to the same conclusion that I did when I tested the Toyota bZ4X. I remember that car being fast and comfortable, in the style of other similar electric SUVs, although in the case of the Subaru and the Toyota the balance is clearly oriented more towards comfort than towards a driver profile looking for certain sporting emotions. In that case you better think about a Mustang Mach-e. A Skoda Enyaq IV is not going to give you more sensations, but perhaps it will give you more quiet driving when you go on the highway, and a somewhat better feeling of spaciousness, even if it is at the cost of a less sophisticated presentation than in the Subaru.

The aerodynamic noise thing is something that has caught my attention about the Solterra. Electric cars allow your hearing to be especially sensitive, and when you increase speed on the highway, inside the Subaru you can hear the wind hitting the body more than in other electric SUVs. It is by no means a noisy car. Simply, that detail can catch your attention because everything else is very quiet.
